Nashik Thermal Power Station, Maharashtra, INDIA

The existing raw water treatment plant at Nashik Thermal Power Station, Stage-1 (NTPS), Maharashtra, India consists of six numbers of vertical flow sludge blanket type settling tanks, followed by three rapid sand gravity filter beds.
The capacity of the plant is 1200 cum/hr and source is river Godavari. The raw water quality over the years has deteriorated due to untreated sewage released in river by Nashik city and due to leaching fertilizers from upstream sugarcane fields. In the lean flow season (8 to 9 months) the problem becomes acute and the COD value reaches up to 50-60 mg/l. The raw water has appearance of pale brownish black brew and obviously heavily laden with organics.
