The existing water treatment plant supplying drinking water to Haldia Industrial Complex is located on the west bank on the downstream of river Rupanarayan and Hoogly at village Geonkhali. . It was constructed in the year 2005 having capacity of plant 20 mgd (3800 cum/hr). The treatment plant complex consisted of Jackwell, Raw Water Pump House, Pre-Settling tanks, Intermediate Pumping Station, Receiving Chamber, Parshall Flume, Clariflocculators (2 no), Rapid sand gravity filters ( 12 no), Pure Water Sump & Pump House, Chemical House, Wash-water disposal pumps and sludge lagoons.
Due to proximity of Intake near the sea, surface water available at the source is saline during the high tide. Hence the raw water is pumped at double the plant rate for 10-12 hrs during the day during the low tide to the pre-settling tank ( Storage, 4 bn lit) during low salinity. The Intermediate pumping station then pumps the raw water at rated plant capacity. The maximum raw water turbidity received at plant is 400-500 NTU.
