Haldia (West Bengal)

Introduction :
The existing water treatment plant supplying drinking water to Haldia Industrial Complex is located on the west bank on the downstream of river Rupanarayan and Hoogly at village Geonkhali. . It was constructed in the year 2005 having capacity of plant 20 mgd (3800 cum/hr). The treatment plant complex consisted of Jackwell, Raw Water Pump House, Pre-Settling tanks, Intermediate Pumping Station, Receiving Chamber, Parshall Flume, Clariflocculators (2 no), Rapid sand gravity filters ( 12 no), Pure Water Sump & Pump House, Chemical House, Wash-water disposal pumps and sludge lagoons.
Due to proximity of Intake near the sea, surface water available at the source is saline during the high tide. Hence the raw water is pumped at double the plant rate for 10-12 hrs during the day during the low tide to the pre-settling tank ( Storage, 4 bn lit) during low salinity. The Intermediate pumping station then pumps the raw water at rated plant capacity. The maximum raw water turbidity received at plant is 400-500 NTU. In the year 2006, Haldia Development Authority (HAD) decided to increase the water supply by capacity by 5 mgd (950 cum/hr) as an intermediate measure to satisfy the increased demand of their customers. It was decided to augment the existing plant from 20 mgd to 25 mgd (25%).After the detailed investigation it was confirmed that most of the channels and conduits were capable of taking the increased flow without increasing appreciable headloss. The two clariflocculators of 48.50m diam were retrofitted with tube settlers to treat the additional flow of 5 mgd.. Five numbers of Rapid sand gravity filter ( of same size and configuration as existing) were constructed and integrated with the existing Filter House. One no Raw water pump, one no of intermediate pump and one no of Pure Water Pump were integrated with the existing pumping and piping system. The modifications work took nine months to complete. This is a good case of partial augmentation of existing plant utilizing maximum inherent system redundancy.
